The Columbia city government consists of the Mayor, who is elected every four years, six members of the City Council, elected every two years and the City Clerk/Treasurer and City Attorney both appointed by the Mayor.
Mayor Patrick R. Bell was sworn in on November 2, 2004. This was a result of the former Mayor Curtis Hardwick resigning from office after accepting a position with the Department of Transportation. Mayor Bell was then elected to office in January 2006.
He is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and a former educator.
He served as the first Executive Director of the Lake Cumberland Area Development District for 13 years. He was also Executive Director of the Lake Cumberland District Health Department which services a ten county area in Kentucky.
His local commitments include, Chairman of the Columbia Housing Authority Board and a member of the Lake Cumberland Area Development District Board.
